9 11 rescuer recounts long battle with health effects

Cynthia Mahoney, 54, an Episcopal nun and former EMT, is among about 30,000 responders who survived the World Trade Center attacks. She recalls rushing to Bellevue Hospital, offering triage as debris rained down, sheltering in St Pauls Chapel cemetery and sharing an air pack with firefighters as the towers collapsed. Fentanyl overdoses rise in Aiken County

Over the last 90 days four residents in Aiken County died from fentanyl after extracting it from patches. Coroner Tim Carlton notes Aiken is one of two counties in the state with this problem, with three of the deceased lacking prescriptions. The DEA notes fentanyl is about 80 times stronger than morphine.

Mexican immigrants in South Carolina show education gains and ongoing mobility

A University of South Carolina survey of 381 young male Mexican immigrant workers found over 40 percent hold high school diplomas and about a third work in construction with an average annual income of 21 000 dollars. The study notes unsettled yet better educated workers and 16 percent of income sent to relatives in Mexico.
