Japanese Attack on U.S. Commemorated at Ellwood Beach
Ellwood California marks the 50th anniversary of a Japanese submarine shelling an oil field near Filwood Beach on February 23, 1942. The attack caused minor damage, heightened wartime fear, and preceded mass Japanese American internment orders four days earlier, amid lingering scare from Pearl Harbor.
