The Aiken County Community Traffic Safety Program discussed making the county safer on the roads. Committee chairman Jones Bowen proposed a survey of seatbelt usage to give officials a clearer view of wearing rates and suggested involving school clubs to assist data collection.
Lt Marc Toole and Sgt Dean McFarland lead a county seatbelt survey focusing on critical intersections Whiskey and Pine Log Clearwater and S C 421 University Parkway and Jefferson Davis Highway. They stress aggressive media outreach and target groups by gender during peak hours 7 9am 11am to 1pm. The next committee meeting is Thursday March 28 at Tri Development Center.
The Smith-Hazel Activity Center hosted a History for Seniors program for Black History Month. Seniors shared antiques and old photographs while Second Baptist Church Preparatory School children performed gospel songs. Guests included Kenya pastor Stakewell Yurenimo, invited by Bud Chittenen, who spoke on faith, missions, and aid to Kenya amid poverty.

Harrison alleges conspiracy and fraud over a 1992 contract to General Physics for a training program. Harrison previously won 1.1 million in an unlawful discharge suit.
A 15 year old male driver in a red 1998 Ford F-150 lost control on Piney Heights Road near Pine Log Road. The truck overturned several times, the driver was thrown from the vehicle, and both teens were hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver faces charges for driving too fast for conditions.
Investigators hold an outstanding arrest warrant for Warrenville resident Leonard Sapp 31 in connection with Tuesday night armed robbery at Four Seasons Food and Fuel on Storm Branch Road. Sapp faces one count of armed robbery. Police seek public tips with anonymity and cash reward up to 1000 dollars.

The USDA Forest Service will conduct prescribed burns across Abbeville Edgefield Greenwood McCormick and Saluda on the Sumter National Forest Long Cane Ranger District. A helicopter will be used with manual ignition in other areas to treat 5000 to 7000 acres to reduce future wildfires and improve habitat for wild turkey quail and songbirds. Residents may see helicopter activity and smoke for six weeks and should drive cautiously and follow road signs.
