Center for History to Open Late 2015 in Aiken
The former Immanuel Institute at York Street and Richland Avenue will become the Center for African American History Art and Culture later this year. The building, built in 1890 by Rev. William Coles, has housed Immanuel School Lincoln Theatre St Gerard's Catholic School and various businesses. A steering committee secured an accommodations tax grant in 2004 to form the center, aiming to tell local Black history and notable founders and officials from Aiken County.

Aikenite Jim Lorraine joins inaugural Presidential Leadership Scholars
More than 1,000 U.S. citizens entered round one for the program, but Jim Lorraine, president of Americas Warrior Partnership, is one of 60 scholars who will tour presidential libraries and attend workshops. The six month executive education begins in Mount Vernon and includes study of leaders from Johnson to Bush, with about 100 hours of sessions and case studies.

Battle of Aiken offers students living Civil War history
Students bundled against 20 degree wind immersed in Civil War history during the Battle of Aiken School Day. Gates open 8 30 a m for two days at 1210 Powell Pond Road with demonstrations from a period candlemaker carpenter and blacksmith. Admission runs 10 for ages 13 plus 5 for ages 6 12 and free for under 5.
