Netherlands Prime Minister van Agt Cancels SC Visit

The University of South Carolina announced that Prime Minister Andreas van Agt canceled his four day stay in Columbia and planned visits to Charleston Greenville and Aiken due to domestic issues in the Netherlands. Officials hope to reschedule. In Aiken he would tour the Savannah River Plant and attend a luncheon at Houndslake Country Club.

Harwell Named To Court In South Carolina

Newly elected Associate Supreme Court Justice David W. Harwell will disqualify himself when the case of condemned killer Joseph Carl Shaw reaches the court. Harwell, 48, previously sentenced Shaw to death as a circuit judge for the murders of two Columbia teens. Shaw is appealing. Harwell won election over Ernest A. Finney Jr. and John Grimball. Rodney A. Peeples and John W. Harte Jr. were also re elected to their posts.

Man Charged In Jackson Murder

A Jackson man, John Carl Bentley Jr., 24, was arrested at the Texas Mexico border on armed robbery and murder charges tied to the Feb 13 Hilltop Service Station killing of Fate Taylor, 60. Bentley is held in Texas for extradition to Aiken County. A juvenile female companion was found in Brownsville and placed in protective custody.
