Democratic governors will receive a political chalk talk in Annapolis about keeping their states from Nixon's November win. Joe Napolitan, who advised Humphrey in 1968, and Richard Scammon, co author of The Real Majority, will outline vulnerability points for the Republican ticket.
Walter Winchell, famed fast talking columnist and radio newscaster, died Sunday at age 74 in Los Angeles. His slangy show business column ran from 1929 to 1969, and his radio newscast drew millions from 1932 into the early 1960s.
About 300 British soldiers clashed with rioters in Londonderry's Bogside district as youths built barricades and pelted troops with rocks bottles and bricks. Soldiers used tear gas rubber bullets and nausea gas, with snipers firing about 50 rounds over rioters heads and troops replying with a similar number at selected targets.
The National Assembly of 1308 delegates met to re elect Chiang Kai shek and adopted a resolution condemning President Nixon's trip to Peking. The body warned the visit damages Chinese national rights and interests and said Chiang's government will not recognize any agreements Nixon may reach.
West Coast longshoremen vote to end a 134 day strike the longest on the mainland as preparations test cranes from Bellingham to San Diego. Larger crews are mobilized to handle 218 ships idled between Canada and Mexico with 57 crews in San Francisco Bay and Seattle assigning 17 day crews and 10 night crews.
Former North Carolina Gov. Terry Sanford says he will place his name on the state presidential primary ballot. He calls his effort an extremely long shot with bare possibilities, in an interview with the Raleigh News and Observer.
Washington AP reports a proposal to expel members missing more than 30 percent of votes highlights House and Senate absenteeism. Leaders deride the slow pace as Mansfield blasts the Senate while House speakers push to keep sessions. Reform talks include a 70 percent attendance bill.
The University of South Carolina Aiken extension student paper endorses Dr Franklin B Ashley head of English as a Democratic candidate for the state Senate urging him to oppose incumbent Sen Michael Laughlin in the June primary. Ashley has not indicated whether he will run and could not be reached for comment.
President Nixon met with Mao Tse tung and Chou En-lai in separate talks and urged a long march toward peace on divergent paths. At a banquet, Chou outlined diplomatic terms while Nixon said no need for enmity after 20 years.
At least seven people killed in South Carolina weekend crashes including two on Aiken County roads. Among the victims is 28 year old Arthur Lee Davis of Columbia.
Robert D. Cathcart was named executive editor of the Aiken Standard. He succeeds Eugene J. Ovier who moves to Charleston to join the Charleston Evening Post copy desk. Cathcart, a native of Oberlin Kansas, came from Rock Hill where he was Evening Herald managing editor.
South Vietnamese border Rangers launched a sharp assault on a North Vietnamese base camp about 100 miles south of Da Nang. The South Vietnamese claimed 62 enemy killed and reported two Rangers wounded in the operation.
Dr Feltham S James pastor of St Johns United Methodist Church in Aiken received the George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. The 23rd annual awards honored 29 South Carolina residents and organizations across 16 cities and two military installations for a sermon titled Source of Greatness delivered June 25 at the American Legion South Carolina convention in Greenville. The sermon, published in the Congressional Record at Sen Strom Thurmonds request, traced Gods importance from the founding of the United States to modern times. James is a former superintendent of the Lake City District of the South Carolina Methodist Conference and a Duke University and Wofford College alumnus active in American Legion affairs.
