The Temporary Emergency Court of Appeals ruled the FEA illegally allowed about 14 percent of US oil to sell at free market prices for over a year. Old oil before May 15, 1972 kept a $5.25 ceiling, while new oil found after that date rose to about $11 a barrel, near cartel levels.
Ex CIA official Donald B. McBride, a retired Lt. Col., is under active consideration to assist the Senate committee probing the U S intelligence community. McBride worked in Colby’s office from 1973 until last January and coordinated with agencies targeted by both Senate and House investigations.
Defense Secretary James R. Schlesinger defended U S troop deployments in Western Europe saying no deployment is more important than the 300000 strong force in Germany. He testified before the House Armed Services Committee amid questions on NATO support and defense budgets.
Senator George McGovern accused Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz of sabotaging the food stamp program and urged him to run the program as intended or resign. McGovern, chairman of the Senate Select Nutrition Committee, spoke as Butz prepared to testify before the Senate Agriculture Committee. No immediate reply from Butz.
