The Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce hosts a 5 30 p m forum at the Aiken Municipal Building to discuss proposed property tax reform. Mayor Fred Cavanaugh presents with others and urges considering all revenue sources before deciding. The House bill would cut owner occupied home property taxes and raise the sales tax from 5 to 7 percent.

The Black Historical Committee’s annual parade drew notable turnout despite showers. Rick Brown praised the size, while families along Hampton Avenue enjoyed candy from floats. Attendees from Randall Branch Baptist Church and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority highlighted heritage and unity.
President Bush urged Congress to fund a $250 million program to accelerate research on nuclear fuel reprocessing aimed at reducing reactor waste and keeping technology out of terrorist hands. He noted the 1970s shift away from reprocessing due to proliferation concerns and cited a new approach not yet proven outside the lab.
Twenty three special youths attended the inaugural Young Marine Program training at Aiken Technical College Ashley Little Building. Volunteers from former Marines taught boot camp style lessons emphasizing education and fitness as the nine week course fills a waiting list of over twenty families.
