Wellington AP report says the batwinged cannibal fly found only in New Zealand and tied to Fiordland is among the world’s rarest. Government biologist Mike Meads notes sightings have been limited since its 1901 Milford Sound discovery. The species’ lifecycle remains largely unknown and extinction risk is high.
