Marine's Conviction Overturned By Court
A military appeals court in Washington overturned Marine Barbara J. Baum's conviction for having sex with another woman amid the 1988 Parris Island crackdown on alleged lesbians. The three judge panel found two jurors not impartial and criticized the military judge for reliance on uncorroborated evidence. Baum, who spent 228 days in the brig, may face retrial but could not serve more time in the brig. lawyers said a new trial could lead to a bad conduct discharge or other publicity. Baum, 25, originally from Mishawaka, Indiana, now resides in Lakewood, Florida.
