Phyllis Pellarin told the Senior Men's Club at the Ramada Inn that AACOA plans to renovate the Teen Town building on Morgan Street into a multi purpose center. Bricks costing 100 each will be engraved with donor names to raise funds. 75 bricks have sold. The Senior Men's Club voted to buy a gold brick.
A West Columbia magistrate ordered the bribery case against suspended Columbia Police Chief Arthur Hess presented to the Lexington County Grand Jury. If indicted, Hess could face trial in the April term. State agent Murray Fant testified about an electronic monitored deal in which Hess allegedly accepted $3,000 from Joel Hendrix to protect Hendrix’s night clubs and pinball machines.
After 16 months Aiken County transfers ledgers to an $86,000 computer. Finance Director Frieda Walker says the system provides real time status of budgets and improved fiscal control. The setup includes seven terminals and two printers across clerk of court purchasing finance and treasurer offices. The system supports cash management, investments of idle funds, and court payments while staff adapt to new data processing duties.
Aiken businessman John P. Sonneborn faces a DHEC complaint to move 238 drums of hazardous 2 4 dinitrophenol from Edgefield and Aiken sites to an approved disposal site. The order seeks 25000 dollars a day in fines for each day of storage. Sonneborn has 20 days to comply.
