SC House Approves Overhaul of Jobless Benefits Agency
South Carolina moves Employment Security Commission under the governor with a Cabinet level restructure. The House backed the plan 108 to 1 to eliminate the commissioners oversight and empower the governor to fire the agency director, while a six member panel and three governor appointees monitor operations. The audit cited lack of accounting skills and tax issues, and the bill tightens rules on severance pay offsets and temporary workers to curb losses in the unemployment trust fund.
