Gov Beasley nominates Michael Moore a 45 year old Texan with 28 years in prison work to head the South Carolina Corrections Department replacing Parker Evatt. Senate confirmation required. Moore promises to ensure inmates never want to return to prison.
Kenneth Wayne Garrett 31 faces four counts of falsifying a diploma for fraudulent use. Investigators say he used fake master and bachelor diplomas to seek a promotion at General Electric in Greenville.
Aiken County Sheriff's Office reports the arrest of two juvenile males jailed on second degree lynching charges in connection with a Jan. 25 Beech Island attack on a 15 year old. The suspects face 3 to 20 years if convicted and will be tried in General Sessions Court as adults. The office notes a pattern of crimes by youths from New Ellenton and Beech Island, with eight such arrests since November. A separate November 1994 shooting death on Whiskey Road is tied to a teen group member. trials are pending.
The Commerce Department reports a 1994 merchandise gap of 166.29 billion dollars, up 25.4 percent from 1993, as imports climbed to 669.09 billion while exports reached a record 502.8 billion. Economists warn Mexico turmoil may worsen 1995 outlook.
The National Health and Social Life Survey shows nearly one third of Americans altered their sex lives to avoid AIDS, with increased condom use and less sexual activity. Some report sleeping around less or avoiding sex entirely, while those at highest risk take the most precautions.
South Carolina Attorney General Charlie Condon said the Confederate battle flag should stay atop the Statehouse unless the Legislature acts. He asked the state Supreme Court to drop a pending suit or allow a new brief outlining the revived position. The issue, he said, is for legislators, not courts, to decide.
Coble refused to comment Friday, citing the case before the court, and said he had not read Condon's opinion but that the action would not alter his view on the flag's legal status. Condon acknowledged his reference to Rebel.
North Augusta Mayor Thomas L. Greene urged Sen Strom Thurmond and Sen Ernest Hollings and Reps Lindsey Graham and Floyd Spence to intervene as the Clinton administration plans to cut about 4200 jobs at the Savannah River Site. Greene also visited Washington with a Citizens Advisory Board to press for fair cutbacks.
