Aiken County Quakes With 2.5 Magnitude Tremor

An earthquake near South Aiken shook the area on Wednesday with a magnitude around 2.5. Scientists in Charleston assigned 2.6 readings, noting the epicenter 2 to 3 miles southeast of Aiken, while residents reported windows rattling and a few minor damages. No further tremors were detected statewide and SRP operations continued normally.

Forests Regeneration Effort Presses On In South Carolina

The state planted over 125 million tree seedlings in 1985 86 but more regeneration is needed as 23 000 acres of private forest lands remain un regenerated after harvests totaling 1 4 million idle acres. Forests provide wood recreation soil protection water quality and wildlife habitat while industry races to expand and avert a pine shortfall within two decades. Private landowners are key in this effort with Union Camp and Weyerhauser supplying seedlings and researching faster better trees at Quail Ridge Nursery.
