Therapy dog Serena inspires through visits in Aiken and North Augusta
Steve Briggs and his therapy dog Serena, a German shepherd, are featured in Paw Prints Serena's Story, a 2010 documentary spanning a week of visits in North Augusta and Aiken. Briggs, a two time cancer survivor, shifts focus to children and veterans as Serena ages, with mentoring from Molly's Militia founder Elaine van de Linden. Serena's calm presence enhances classroom communication at Hammond Hill and North Augusta Elementary, earning praise from teachers like Uyen Griffis. Briggs plans to retire Serena gradually, train Lady as a future therapy dog, and continue outreach while promoting pet population control and fostering. Serena will be honored March 24 at the Aiken SPCA Volunteer Appreciation and Awards.
