Artificial tire reef turns into an environmental nightmare
A Broward County study recounts how a 1972 artificial reef project using up to 2 million tires off Fort Lauderdale failed to attract marine life. Tires broke loose, covered swaths of the seabed, blocked coral growth, and washed ashore. Officials push a $3.4 million salvage through 2010 with Navy and Army divers.
