SRS hits eight millionth glass canister milestone at DWPF
At Savannah River Site the Defense Waste Processing Facility poured its eight millionth pound of radioactive glass into a canister since 1996. DWPF has produced over 2,000 stainless steel glass canisters with 10 foot tall by two foot diameter containers and plans a second storage building with 2,340 underground spaces. The project supports moving waste from tanks to immobilized glass and awaits shipment to a long term Yucca Mountain repository, delayed amid political opposition.
