Battle of Aiken re enacts last Confederate victory weekend

Sons of Confederate Veterans stage the Battle of Aiken as the biggest living history event in the state with around 600 reenactors from 15 states. Gen Fighting Joe Wheeler defended Augusta in 1865 to halt Union forces, while Col Judson Kilpatrick and Sherman’s troops moved toward Columbia. The site on Coleman Bridge Road near Shaw’s Fork hosts hundreds of period uniforms, cannons, tents, and horses for a history lesson and entertainment draw anticipated to exceed 10,000 spectators this year.
