Westinghouse Savannah River Company moves ahead with a two year workforce reduction at the Savannah River Site. The plan, approved by Secretary Bodman and now in public comment, could cut 2000 positions with 874 layoffs by mid June.
The State House in Columbia drew hundreds of children, parents, and educators as lawmakers debated a bill offering tax credits for parents sending children to private, charter, parochial, or home schools. Opponents argued the plan hurts low income families and home schoolers would gain little.
Aiken Planning Commission approved a preliminary annexation request from Gem Lakes residents led by about 87 percent of property owners. The sewer system purchase by the city looms as a parallel, not discussed edge, with talks already underway with South Carolina Utilities.
Austin Owens 24 of Trenton and Christina Clifford 19 of Aiken face charges after Owens fled from the Lower Savannah Pre-Release Center with Clifford’s alleged help. Authorities say Owens’ vehicle sped toward officers forcing them to dive into a ditch as they pursued.
