A man dressed in black opened fire with a shotgun and two handguns from a lecture hall stage at Northern Illinois University on Thursday. Five students were killed and 16 injured before the shooter died by suicide, authorities said.

Seven of eight men accused in the Christmas Eve kidnapping and killing of 20 year old Jeremy Leaphart had bond denied Thursday in Aiken County court. The eighth defendant, a 16 year old charged as an adult, was not present for the hearing. Circuit Court Judge Clifton called the crime a sum of its parts and denied bond to all, noting varied roles in the alleged kidnapping and torture.
