The Commerce Department reports December 1987 U.S. trade deficit at 12.2 billion, the smallest since January, amid record exports of 24.8 billion. For 1987, the annual deficit widened to a record 171.2 billion as imports reached 424.1 billion while exports rose to 252.9 billion. The Dow Jones rose and traders noted a muted market response to the smaller deficit. The year saw the largest U.S. trade gap with Japan at 59.8 billion.
The Columbia state Senate narrowly passes a large Safer Highways Act with tougher penalties for safety violations and drunk driving and provisions on tinted glass. The bill, approved 29 to 2, heads to conference with a House version that includes branding convicted first offense drunk drivers.
DOE plans a recirculating cooling tower for Savannah River Plant K Reactor at an estimated 90 million to replace once through cooling. The choice delays construction for most of a year and could push operation by seven to ten years after negotiations with DHEC.
The Horse Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant near North Augusta with a 20 million gallon daily capacity is being considered to serve Edgefield and McCormick counties. The Ai xen County Development Committee discussed potential partnerships Wednesday, with County Administrator W Scott Barnes to arrange meetings. McCormick County backs the plan due to the Savannah Lakes Village development, a 3,200 acre project along Thurmond Lake bought in 1986 from the federal government. Cooper Communities Inc. of Bentonville Ark develops the land.
