Aiken County Receives Share of Federal Air Fine

Aiken County will receive 20 790 dollars from a landmark air pollution fine against the federal government. The 103 950 dollars total was paid by the Department of Energy to South Carolina for violations at the Savannah River Plant coal fired boilers. Barnwell County gets 31 185 dollars. the rest goes to the state treasury. The split reflects 9 of 15 SRP smokestacks in Barnwell and 6 in Aiken. County Administrator L. C. Greene said the funds will go to the county general fund.
