The 1984 Chevrolet Camaro tops the 1986 theft list, followed by the 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass. All top ten stolen models come from General Motors,-maker of nearly half of U.S. cars. Thefts driven by spare parts demand, says Glen Tullman of Certified Collateral Corp.
Former Metropolitan Opera head Sir Rudolf Bing 85 and his wife Carroll Douglass 47 are living in a beach bungalow on Anguilla. Police commissioner Joseph Norris Payne said he visited the couple for a few minutes Monday. Bing was ruled incompetent in New York after an earlier Jan 12 hearing where Alzheimer’s was diagnosed and a conservator was appointed to manage his $900,000 estate.

Secretary Bennett released the annual wall chart ranking states on college entrance and graduation metrics for 1985-86. Scores were largely flat with slight drops in graduation rates while SAT scores held and ACT scores edged up slightly. Alaska was the only state with a decline.
The Aiken City Council debated a proposed 4-2-1 districting method with opponents pushing for a 6-1 system. Citizens urged single-member districts while supporters argued the hybrid plan preserves at large representation and minority rights under DOJ preclearance criteria.
Aiken voters will elect a new council member on February 17 while residents in areas annexed since November 1984, including Southwood I, are barred from voting. The Justice Department pre cleared the election for the city council replacement of Willar Hightower, but 22 homes face voting restrictions pending final annexation approval.
The Democratic National Committee will announce Atlanta as the site for the 1988 Democratic National Convention July 18 to 21. About 35,000 people will attend, with Houston lobbying failed despite offers of funding and a stalled Houston convention center project.
