Fidel Castro told Bill Moyers the Carter administration could bring peace and friendship between the United States and Cuba. He praised Carter's moral sense and suggested U S policy might follow universal principles rather than rigid Marxist or capitalist ideologies. Castro said he was pleased by the election results.
Queen Alia, 29, wife of King Hussein, was buried near Amman after a helicopter crash in a rainstorm. A crowd of about 3,000 mourners gathered for a 90 minute service at a mosque and cemetery as King Hussein attended in traditional Bedouin dress.
Opponents of Paul Warnke seek a hardline stance from the Carter administration as SALT talks resume later this year. During Senate hearings, Paul Nitze outlined the approach, arguing the issue includes both the man and the American position. The standoff involved multiple stores closing and a police negotiator, with Gregory firing a rifle shot over an officer’s head during talks.
