In Nagano Japan the United States women’s hockey team opened indoors and won 7 to 1 over Sweden as Finland defeated Japan 11 to 1 and Canada beat China 20 to 0 leaving the trio United States Canada and Finland with 2 0 records Japan Sweden and China at 0 2 Sweden led early on a Pia Morelius deflected goal but the US broke the tie late in the first period and again in the second to surge ahead, with Laurie Baker scoring on Anica Ahlen.
