Gas explosion at Connecticut power plant kills five

An explosion during a blow down at the Kleen Energy Systems plant in Middletown killed at least five workers and injured over a dozen others. The 620 megawatt facility was 95 percent complete and under purging of natural gas lines when the blast occurred around 1:15 a.m. Investigators will examine the cause as crews search debris through the night. Local residents reported the blast felt like a sonic boom, with extensive damage to the unfinished structure and surrounding area.

Endeavour ready for second night launch attempt at Cape Canaveral

NASA fuels the shuttle for a second straight night as Endeavour, with six crew aboard led by Commander George Zamka, aims to lift off at 4 14 a m for the last major space station construction mission. A 60 percent weather chance persists. The Tranquility living quarters and dome—built with European Space Agency support—are aboard, valued at over 400 million dollars, bringing the ISS to 98 percent completion. The crew plans three spacewalks to connect the module and make a 360 degree view possible.
