Residents protest NC plans for nearby low level waste dump
Residents near the North Carolina border oppose a proposed low level radioactive waste site three miles from South Carolina, arguing pollution would affect SC water and downstream communities while NC benefits from the waste. Richmond County leaders funded a study deeming the site unsuitable due to groundwater flow and nearby streams. Local officials fear water contamination and impact on Bennettsville’s water supply.
