The Aiken Standard reports computer problems prevented publication of several local stories planned for today. The paper regrets the omissions and extends apologies to readers.
Durward E. Koonce of Elgin South Carolina was first of three Megabucks jackpot winners to turn in his ticket. He bought it at Raynham Park dog track. The other two winners had not yet claimed. Each ticket pays 1.3 million over 20 years after taxes.
Budget Director David Stockman proposes charging fees to meat and poultry processors for USDA inspections to trim the deficit by about 50 billion dollars. Currently funded by taxpayers, inspections total about 350 million annually and would raise meat and poultry prices. Holly Farms Inc official Kenneth May says the cost is an extra business expense. In North Carolina about 125 plants are covered by federal inspections and 375 by state inspections.
Ohio based Taft Broadcasting Co agrees to acquire five TV stations and seven radio stations from Gulf Broadcast Co for 755 million dollars. Taft plans to close this year pending FCC and Gulf stockholder approvals with financing led by Bank of New York.
The Aiken County School Board asks the Legislative Delegation for about 800000 to maintain current programs in 1985 86 and 2.4 million more for the rest of this year for salaries and maintenance. If state funds fail, a 36.56 mill tax hike may be needed. 71.2 percent of revenue would be state sources, 28.5 local, 0.3 federal.
The South Carolina Senate remains deadlocked after three days of debate on relaxing blue laws. A countywide local option amendment is favored by Branton and eyed for Tuesday, while concerns about inconsistent county rules persist. Gov. Riley backs Sunday sales 1 to 6 p.m., with the court still split on statewide or local action.
Aiken County retailers urge the right to open Sundays during limited hours amid Gov Riley’s proposal to repeal blue laws allowing 1 to 6 pm shopping with strict enforcement rest of day. Many shop owners favor choice but doubt frequent Sunday openings.
Duke University oceanographer Dr. Richard T. Barber will use a 330000 Creativity Award from the National Science Foundation to fund a three year El Nino study. Barber discusses how Pacific currents influence weather worldwide and how diminished trade winds shift warm water eastward toward Peru and the Pacific coast.
