Jobless rate climbs slightly in January

The U S unemployment rate rose to 6.4 percent in January from 5.3 percent in December, the highest since July. Clinton budget will cost 1400 positions for SRS

Savannah River Site officials said they must lay off 1,400 to 1,500 workers this spring to meet the 1998 budget. The cuts follow 875 involuntary layoffs in January and 150 construction layoffs by Sept. 30 as projects finish, with DOE CFO John Pescosolido citing new efficiencies reducing headcount.
