South Carolina moves to curb turtle exports
Rep. Tom Young leads a push to stop exporting turtles from South Carolina to protect native species and aid recovery. Researchers from Savannah River Ecology Lab cite 31 million turtles exported between 2002 and 2005 and urge a rule limiting shipments to under ten turtles per site to prevent pillaging. A subcommittee backed the bill 7-0, with a full House vote possible the week of February 16.
