Transportation Department opens inquiry into 2010 Prius brake problems as safety issues at Toyota widen. Autopsies show actress Brittany Murphy died of pneumonia with contributing factors, while Casey Johnson died from diabetes complications.
Obituaries list Edwin K. Ashe Sr. of North Augusta Cecilia A. Colvin Martha N. Johnson Graniteville Beech Island Edmund Perry Palmer Columbia James Robert Rachels Sr. and George F. Seigler among those reported in the Augusta region. Funeral notices appear in the 6A section.
Pearl Burbage Posey died at 91 leaving a trove of albums and memorabilia from Bath and Gloverville area mills. Her daughter Kay Chriswell uncovered 23 albums with photos obituaries and a cherished retirement book noting a $78.27 net pay for a 40 hour week.
State House lawmakers in both chambers review a proposal to outlaw texting and ban hands free phone use while driving. A House subcommittee backed texting and talking bans, but full committee debate may separate the issues. Rep. Tom Young supports texting ban but questions broader restrictions.
Aiken County students fared better on the new PASS standardized test than statewide averages though district officials aim higher. Many students reach grade level while a substantial one-fourth to one-third lag in most subjects. Associate Superintendent Dr. Kevin O Gorman noted some schools posted outstanding results.
State PASS results indicate fewer students achieved exemplary performance across writing language arts math science and social studies. The report notes overall disappointment in the number of exemplary scores and references fourth grade results and page 16A for details.
