State officials warn that office pools and bookmaking are illegal in South Carolina with penalties up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine for organizers. Participants may face fines, and online gambling remains illegal despite its national growth.
In Aiken County, nearly 200 daily buses face mechanical outages with 24 out of service on Thursday. Transportation boss Maria McClure cites aging buses, with mean age rising from seven to twelve years since 1995, while Gov. Sanford’s budget proposal funds only eight million for replacements, leaving routes late and awkward.
Three men died in a head-on collision on Wagener Road near Kitchings Mill. Antwon Darby 26 of Orangeburg Roberto Mercado 26 of Salley and Harold Haun 21 of Williston died from initial impact injuries. Haun was unrestrained and ejected from a Cavalier while Mercado and Darby were in a Ford Escort.
A public hearing on tort reform, sponsored by the South Carolina Democratic Caucus, is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m. at Leavelle McCampbell Middle School in Graniteville. Rep. Doug Jennings notes no retroactive provisions yet, protecting future victims after the Graniteville train wreck and chemical release.
President Bush’s proposals sparked worry among Republicans in Washington as some lawmakers urged abandoning the private accounts idea. Rep. Mark Foley said colleagues are panic-stricken while two veteran House Republicans warned the plan is politically dangerous and favored funding changes from general revenues.
