Nose cone of space shuttle Columbia found near Hemphill Texas
Recovery teams uncovered the shuttle nose cone buried in a thick pine forest near the Louisiana border. EPA official Warren Zehner said the piece weighed about 500 pounds and was among the largest found. By Monday afternoon roughly 12,000 debris pieces were collected across Louisiana and Texas as searchers continued digs.

NASA Leaders Review Columbia Disaster Causes
NASA officials say analysis over a week found no safety-of-flight issues and stress reviewing reservations about the investigation. Readdy notes a damaged insulation piece near the left wing may be the leading candidate, while searchers seek tiles from Columbia’s left wing to complete the puzzle. The shuttle disintegrated over Texas during re entry, seven astronauts died, and external tank foam damage is under renewed scrutiny.
