The House after a heated debate backed a $411 million three year drug abuse campaign and passed the bill 380 to 0 despite Senate support for a larger $1.5 billion five year approach. A conference committee will finalize terms.
Washington reports the nations unemployment rate edged down from six to five point nine percent last month as jobless numbers eased slightly, signaling a modest improvement in the labor market.
John Bal, a long haired patrolman fired by the New York Police Department for insubordination, said he would appeal the dismissal through the courts. He charged the department with selective enforcement of its rules.
Actor George C. Scott and actress Colleen Dewhurst were divorced for the second time under the Dominican Republic's fast divorce laws. The couple, who wed again after a Mexico split in 1965, share two children, Alexander 12 and Campbell 11, with custody to Mrs. Dewhurst. Scott did not attend the proceeding. he consented via attorney while Dewhurst appeared before the judge.
Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko met with President Nixon Thursday in the White House. Press Secretary Ziegler said the discussion in Nixon's office included Henry Kissinger and an interpreter. Yevtushenko, 38, is a best selling Russian poet on a poetry tour abroad.
Secretary of State William Rogers told reporters at the State Department briefing that Edmund Muskie undermined national interests by attacking Nixon's Vietnam peace proposal. He warned such criticism could rally Communists and split American public opinion, prolonging the war in Asia.
Defense Minister Moshe Dayan flew to the United States to meet American officials and sell Israel bonds. He hopes 1972 will be a year of negotiations, not further fighting in the Middle East, and will address Jewish fundraising groups during a two week visit. He will meet Secretary of State Rogers, Defense Secretary Laird and Undersecretary Sisco in Washington.
A mild earthquake tremor hit the Aiken area with a seven minute seismograph reading though residents felt only 5 to 10 seconds. The event centered on Bowman Orangeburg County near the Woodstock Fault with readings in St Louis and Blacksburg. Officials at the Savannah River Plant reported no damage or activation of safety instruments. Local reaction included rattled light fixtures, shaking windows, and frightened residents. No power outages were caused by the quake.
The opening polo game between Aiken and Huntington LI was canceled due to a week of cold rainy weather. Mrs. John Bancroft, manager of the Aiken Polo Club, said the season will start next Sunday at 3 30 on Whitney Field with teams yet to be selected.
In Columbia the South Carolina Senate tentatively approved a repeal of the full-slate voting requirement by 26 to 7 on second reading. The bill would remove the rule that a full slate must be cast in multi-seat races while retaining numbered-seat provisions to limit single-shot voting by minority groups.
Lawmakers consider repealing the brown bag law and restricting minibottle sales to licensed venues with a 25 cent tax. A new bill proposes absentee voting stations on campuses to aid students away from home as voting age has been 18 since last year. Reps Brantley Harvey and Herbert Fielding lead the measure. The Aiken Standard plans a horse news expansion with a special section on February 29.
In Belfast an IRA officer said the Provisional wing will stay away from a British troops ordered Roman Catholic mourning march in Newry. Up to 30,000 people were expected to join the tribute to 13 civilians killed in Londonderry last Sunday.
FBI agents arrested Danny Ward Robertson in Miami on a federal unlawful flight to avoid prosecution warrant. Robertson, 21, Seattle native, linked to June 18 Belvedere killings that killed Thomas Bolin and William Wolfe. He faces arraignment in Dade County and transfer to Aiken County.
American fighter bombers struck an antiaircraft battery 10 miles north of the Ban Karai Pass, 45 miles northwest of the DMZ, after it fired on an unarmed reconnaissance plane. Capt James D Entremont said results were unclear due to thick smoke.
