Carter, 22, gets life in prison for police officer murder

Stephen Carter, 22, pleaded guilty to the 2011 murder of Aiken Department of Public Safety Master Officer Scotty Richardson and received life without parole. He also admitted the attempted murder of Travis Griffin and drew 30 additional years in prison. The plea followed a near-opening statements moment in his capital murder trial.

St Marys dedicates new church in Charleston area

A large crowd gathered as St Mary Help of Christians Parish dedicated its 19,000 square foot church on Fairfield Street costing $9 million. Bishop Robert Guglielmone presided with McCrery Architects noting Renaissance inspiration from Aiken. Youth groups funded portions through lasagna dinners and baptism set fundraisers.

Marine Corps League halts Aiken Memorial Day Parade

Court halts hearing on reporter sources in Brown case

South Carolina Supreme Court stayed a subpoena aimed at Sue Summer of Newberry after she published diary passages allegedly by James Brown's widow. Judge Early had ordered Summer to appear with notes and disclose diary sources. The court stepped in as Summer published the material. a restraining order had been issued.
