The old groundhog may be right as a cold wave warning goes into effect for tonight in the Aiken region. Rain ends this afternoon with clearing and temperatures plunging to near 20 degrees tonight, lingering cold into Thursday with daytime highs around 30s. Small craft warnings remain on lakes as winds pick up.
Philadelphia coordinates report one rat for every two residents in a citywide extermination effort started in 1969 with a $2.4 million federal grant. Regulators say the program has eliminated about one million rats and estimates another million remain at large.
In Munich, researchers at Munich University Neurosurgical Clinic report freeze dried human nerve material used for transplants. Dr. Walter Jacoby said two male patients with severed forearm nerves recovered enough to return to work, after previously failing due to tissue rejection.
In Stockholm a right tire blew out on an air force jet carrying Prime Minister Olof Palme during landing. The pilot kept the aircraft on the strip and halted safely after Palme missed a passenger flight and needed return for a Scandinavian trade conference.
Washington AP The U S Passport Office celebrates a century of service while facing a surge in applicants. More than two million Americans are expected to apply for passports this year double the six year ago total. Director Frances G Knight accuses officials and Congress of penny pinching and criticizes bureaucratic bottlenecks in Washington.
Senators from urban states led by California Democrat Alan Cranston seek to raise the federal mass transit subsidy from 3.1 billion to 10 billion. The amendment, backed by New York and Illinois lawmakers, aims to boost funding as the Senate nears completion of action on the bill.
Japan became the 95th country to sign the nuclear nonproliferation treaty in a brief Moscow ceremony. Ambassador Toru Nakagawa signed at the Soviet Foreign Ministry Spiridonov House venue, the same day as London and Washington ambassadors were set to sign.
Aiken County prepares for a Tricentennial observance with 60 oak saplings donated by William J. Dunbar to be planted at county schools. The program, led by Mrs. Lonnie A. Washington reports Moscow sent a message within days indicating Egypt would receive new Soviet arms, including MIG23 fighters, due to U.S. help to Israel. The drift adds pressure on President Nixon as he weighs expanded arms aid to Israel while France ships planes to Libya. Egypt already awaits remaining U.S. Phantom jets.
