Punxsutawney Phil, a famed weather forecaster groundhog, predicted an early spring marking the ninth such forecast in 101 years. Tradition holds that a shadow means six more winter weeks, while no shadow signals spring is near.
Two gunmen wearing ski masks invaded a private Christian school in Tuscaloosa at about 8 40 a m and took a teacher and a class of grade school children hostage. They demanded to see Mayor Al DuPont, according to Wyatt Rhone assistant headmaster.
Aiken City Manager Roland H. Windham was admitted Sunday to HCA Aiken Regional Medical Centers for tests, according to a hospital spokesman. He is listed in good condition.

Solicitor Robert J. Harte anticipates bond hearings for four defendants in the Linda Bradberry murder case within days. He cautions the court schedule could delay trial, with June more likely than March. Bradberry, 1982 shotgun slaying of his wife, was arrested at his jewelry store in South Aiken. joins Leroy Craig, Allen Blanding Hammett, and James Edward Green, all charged in the case. Craig and Hammett face murder, kidnapping and armed robbery. Green is charged as an accessory before murder.
Washington Democrats express confidence in defeating Reagan’s request for 36.2 million in Contra aid. The president lobbied undecided House members with a prime-time pitch as Foley predicts a hard sell. If approved, the package advances to the Senate for a final vote.
The Commerce Department reports the Index of Leading Economic Indicators fell 0.2 percent in December, the third monthly decline after drops of 1.2 percent in November and 0.1 percent in October. Analysts are split on whether this signals a recession or a slowdown, noting past three-month declines did not always precede a recession. Economists caution that consumer confidence shocks from the October stock plunge could push 1988 into recession, while others foresee continued growth despite risks.
Dozens of representatives from firms and universities gathered at USC Aiken for a day-long session to learn about the Savannah River Plant contract. Bechtel EG&G, Babcock Wilcox, Rockwell, Martin Marietta, UNC Defense and others attended along with universities including USC Aiken and Georgia Tech.
