In a boxing of ACC action North Carolina defeated Clemson 85 to 67 as Page 1B highlights college basketball results. The win strengthens NCs position while Clemson struggles to keep pace on the road.
Mary Lund remains in critical but stable condition after surgeons replaced her artificial pump with the heart of a Montana teenager. Dr. Robert Van Tassel says Lund is recovering very well and not facing any medical problems at this time at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
Pop star Diana Ross wed Norwegian shipping heir Arne Naess before about 200 guests in a 10th century church at Romainmotier Switzerland. Celebrities Stevie Wonder Gregory Peck attended. reception followed at the Beau Rivage Hotel Lausanne.

President Reagan announced the first Gramm-Rudman spending reductions totaling 11.7 billion dollars in a weekly radio address from Camp David. Domestic programs face 4.3 percent cuts and the military 4.9 percent, with exemptions for Social Security and military personnel, and automatic cuts to follow if deficits persist after 1987.
The board found a flame spurt in the right booster during Challenger's final 15 seconds of flight but NASA avoided speculation on its meaning. Officials noted astronauts had no warning and the booster separation motors were not activated. A search effort covered 4 500 square miles as a UFO-like object was investigated and a memorial service honored the seven crew.
Across the United States mourners remember the Challenger crew. Prayers and tributes flow from Cape Canaveral to Houston and Beaufort. Ronald McNair and Christa McAuliffe are praised for inspiring children and communities. Funeral and memorial services are planned nationwide.
A US News & World Report poll finds 73 percent of Americans view the shuttle explosion as a price worth paying for space exploration. Among 1003 respondents 55 percent support civilian flights while 41 percent favor restricting flights to professionals.
