Government urges halving salt intake for at risk groups
The U S government releases dietary guidelines targeting about half the population, pushing those over 51, African Americans, and individuals with hypertension, diabetes, or kidney disease to limit sodium to around 1500 mg daily. For others the recommendation remains about 2300 mg, with industry reforms and lower salt in foods urged to reduce consumption over time. Major makers like Kraft, ConAgra, General Mills, Heinz, Campbell, and Bumble Bee have announced multi year plans to cut sodium, with Campbell's reporting over 200 lower sodium products now available.

Final Gulf oil spill settlement paid to single BP partner
BP's Gulf Coast Claims Facility issued a final settlement check of 10 million dollars to one company, a unique case among about 91,000 claimants. The fund administrator Kenneth Feinberg says final checks will begin no earlier than February, with many awaiting interim payments. BP refuses to identify the business due to confidentiality, noting it lobbied for the deal.
