No Agreement Made To Accept Juveniles In Aiken

State officials deny any agreement to accept Aiken County juveniles from the closed jail. The Aiken County jail closure prompted questions about transport to the R and E Center in Columbia and housing terms. Youths have not been transported and no formal deal exists until the Youth Services board meets February 14.

Clearwater Woman Dies In Auto Wreck

A mid morning crash in Edgefield County killed Betty N. Tice 29 of Clearwater and injured two men. The tractor tanker overturned but its driver escaped injury. the tanker was empty. James Tice of Langley is listed in serious condition. Norman Tice was treated and released. The wreck occurred at Graniteville Road and USS 25.

Sunday gasoline sales possible in oil shortage plan

Unidentified Black Man Shot Near Belvedere

The body of a 38 year old Black man was found in pines near Belvedere and U.S. 25 between Clearwater Road and Rosemary Lane. He died from a single gunshot wound to the head and investigators, aided by nine deputies, work to identify him using photographs fingerprints and dental records. Death time is undetermined due to cold weather delaying decomposition.

Gunnells Hearing Request Denied Again

Ralph R. Gunnells a former lieutenant with the Aiken County Sheriff's Department has another hearing request denied by the Fraternal Order of Police. He appealed in January to the Aiken County Council for a public hearing but was rejected since he was not a county employee. Gunnells says he may pursue further legal action.
