The FCC ruled that Pat Paulsen is a national candidate for president and thus stations must provide equal time to other opponents who request it. The ruling follows Disney’s request regarding Paulsen’s appearance on The Mouse Factory and notes his qualification to be on the New Hampshire ballot and active campaigning.
The FTC accepted consent orders requiring a two line "Warning: The surgeon general has determined that cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health" in all cigarette ads. The rule covers newspapers magazines and billboards and applies to six major companies American Brands Brown and Williamson Liggett Lorillard Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds, accounting for 99 percent of U.S. sales.
Northern Ireland MP Bernadette Devlin confronted Home Secretary Reginald Maudling in the House of Commons, striking and scratching him as he spoke about the Londonderry riot that killed 13 civilians. The incident followed Sunday’s deadly clashes.
The Valais government ordered Timothy Leary to leave Switzerland, stating his seven months there without a valid residence permit and arguing his presence sets a bad example for local youth. Police Chief Arthur Bender announced the expulsion at a news conference.

Aiken County Ambulance Commission will likely finalize its nine member panel by mid next week after talks between the county delegation and ambulance study committee. Recommendations from medical and hospital groups were sought by Monday, with decisions on four remaining appointees expected at Monday night’s meeting and final approval targeted for Tuesday.
The Foundation for Modern Liquor Regulations endorses a constitutional amendment to allow liquor by the drink in South Carolina. At a Greenville press conference, the group backs mini-bottle sales at licensed hotels motels restaurants and private clubs. Reverend Alfred Montgomery says the plan is temperance oriented.
In Columbia South Carolina measures to liberalize liquor laws lead the 1972 session. A House bill calls for a constitutional referendum to legalize minibottles for on premise sale. Sen Grimes seeks a similar plan and debate order for minibottles with a 25 cent tax.
In North Augusta city court, three white youths named Terry Sanders Raymond E Ryan and Ray Perkins were sentenced after pleading guilty to involvement in a school ground brawl with black students. Sanders paid a 100 dollar fine, while Ryan and Perkins were sentenced to 10 days of city public works labor.
U S planes delivered their heaviest strikes since late December against SAM sites artillery batteries and radar along the DMZ and northward. The U S Command cited seven protective reaction raids over two days and noted no U S losses.
Voter turnout was light at 52 precincts in Aiken and Saluda counties for the school board election. Incumbent Albert J. Maddox Jr. and J P Moseley Jr. contest an at large seat, while W E Twilley and Gerald Dennis vie for Area 3.
Three people, Paul Collins Raymond Butler and driver Carlehian Butler of Trenton Rt 1 Box 312, were treated at Aiken County Hospital after a truck laden with pulpwood overturned at Wire and Seigler Road around 6 45 a m. Center Community Fire Department sprayed spilled gas and cleared the scene.
Seventeen guns were reported stolen this morning from the Augusta Cycle Shop at 808 Edgefield Road Belvedere by Aiken County investigators VJ Ray and Hastings Boyd. The shop is owned by L K Paul. William Russell 55 of Thomasville Ga was arrested last night on defrauding an innkeeper charges.
Senator James M. Waddell Jr. outlines South Carolina mental health progress from 1821 funding of a public state institution to 1923 community services. He praises Aiken County’s Re Entry Project, noting savings from not institutionalizing six patients could fund expanded regional care and return patients home, with broader regional expansion proposed.
