Aiken hosts a family oriented alcohol free New Year celebration titled First Night 1996. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Newberry Street with a People Grand Processional. Participants may gather at 3 p.m. at the Aiken Center for the Arts to craft masks or banners. See Page 10 for details.
The second man killed in the Myrtle Beach area crash was Anders Bo Lennart Thelander, 27, a Swedish national. Georgetown County coroner Willson Williams released the identity after notifying Thelander's Kalmar, Sweden, parents. Also among the dead was Kermit Essex, 52, of Salters Cove. FAA spokeswoman Mary Ann Cassano said the restored post World War II Chinese plane went down in a pine thicket about 15 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach.
The Aiken Standard runs the last Calvin and Hobbes strip today due to creator retirement. Dilbert will replace it next week along with a new Sunday comics format changing from tabloid to broadsheet pages.

Senator Strom Thurmond led a large crowd at the First Baptist Church for the funeral of state Senator Marshall Williams. He described Williams as a key figure who helped transform South Carolina from rural roots to an industrial leader, urging mourners to celebrate his life and contributions. The service drew governors, lawmakers, and hundreds of mourners.
Officials at the Savannah River Site say the Defense Waste Processing Facility will eventually process 35 million gallons of high-level liquids from 51 underground tanks.
