President Bill Clinton Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea will visit Hilton Head for Renaissance Weekend on New Year’s Eve and depart Sunday noon. They will fly to Arkansas to resume holiday vacation Monday. This marks the 11th straight year the Clintons attend the off the record gathering founded in 1981 by Phil Lader.

Aiken city officials report live oaks along South Boundary Avenue benefited from a deep root fertilization program after a 1993 survey found stress from parking and vehicle traffic. Director Roger LeDuc calls the effort a “shot” to extend the trees by up to 100 years and notes a planting program to replace aging trees.
Downtown Aiken gears up for First Night celebrating New Year’s Eve with a 5 pm parade on Laurens Street. Aiken County filed a protest with the Federal Communications Commission over a $1.26 monthly rise for expanded basic service from InterMedia cable. County officials say the increase exceeds allowable steps and note the firm added only one channel in a year, while inflation provisions exist.
Marketing director Kevin Barrett cites FCC guidelines as InterMedia addresses a protest. Ms. Wilson says the FCC has not set a ruling date, noting similar issues from other communities. A finding of noncompliance could force a retroactive refund to about 13,000 customers.
