Prosecutor details two Brooks fraud schemes and a fatal officer's case
Prosecutors outlined two defrauding schemes by former J. Brooks Financial owner Brooks and his Brooks Real Estate Holdings. They involved a fake Charles Howell Trust diverting investor funds for personal use and Compass Academy, the private school Brooks planned with his wife. Some Compass investors recovered funds from the asset sale. Separately, Joshua Tremaine Jones pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the murder of Master Cpl. Sandy Rogers, an Aiken officer killed during a 2012 pursuit. Jones faces life imprisonment without parole. Rogers' death followed another officer's in the area within weeks.
