Caution urged as residents prepare New Year fireworks

Local law enforcement reminds Aiken County residents to follow ordinances while celebrating. Firecrackers are banned if over a quarter inch in diameter. must be under 2 inches long and under 4 grams of explosives. North Augusta and unincorporated areas permit more fireworks but federal rules cap powder at 50 milligrams. Noise ordinances may be enforced and police will respond to late night celebrations.

Aiken Public Safety urges careful use of fireworks. Parents should never leave children unattended with fireworks and keep water handy. Do not light fireworks in hand, mix with alcohol, or relight duds. Soak duds after 15 to 20 minutes and dispose. Sgt. Aaron Dowdy asks residents to consider neighbors and late hours. Blue Ribbon Commission to tour SRS and hold public meeting

The Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future will tour the Savannah River Site on January 6 with a public tour option and will meet January 7 at the Augusta Marriott Hotel and Suites to receive presentations and public comments. Vocal workshop hosted by Aiken church on January 8

A vocal workshop led by Dr. Ysaye Barwell will take place January 8 from 10 am to 5 pm in the fellowship hall of Aiken First Baptist Church.
