Ponzi schemes collapse surged in 2009 despite Madoff arrest
An AP analysis shows 2009 saw more than 150 Ponzi collapses totaling over 16.5 billion dollars as the recession exposed fraud across all states. Madoff's arrest in December 2008 kept his billions from counting toward 2009. Cases ranged from hundreds of thousands to 7 billion in size with Allen Stanford and Scott Rothstein among notable scammers.
