Sen. Strom Thurmond 95 remains in routine treatment for a head cold and respiratory ailment at Eisenhower Medical Center Fort Gordon near Augusta Georgia. Press secretary John DeCrosta said Thurmond hopes to be released soon with a likely Wednesday outcome as he recovers from laryngitis and a bad cough. Thurmond, president pro tempore and Armed Services Committee chair, extended his record as the nation's longest serving senator last May after a busy holiday in Aiken and a prior October brief hospitalization after a dizzy spell at a Washington rally.
In Belleview Florida a truck backed through a Walgreens storefront and wrapped a tow chain around an automated teller machine. The bolts loosened but the ATM could not be lifted into the truck bed and the driver fled empty handed.

Three Aiken men killed in Miami on December 19 were identified as Lenwood Ramsey 39 Donell Ramsey 28 and Willmont Davis 54. They had been free on bond on chop shop charges and worked at Grady's Paint and Body on Pipeline Road. Police noted the deaths involved fire and toxins pending toxicology results and investigations into why they were with Jose Antonio Elias 32 of Carol City Miami.
Aiken County residents plan a diverse New Year’s Eve. First Night Aiken offers a alcohol free multi cultural arts program downtown with a 6 30 pm grand procession and a midnight fireworks on Newberry Street. Over 25 acts include Jumpstart Tom Smith Kilimanjaro Alkebulan and Jean Morand. Tickets cost 5 to 7 with children free. Also Carolina Jamboree hosts a special New Year’s Eve show at 88 Johnston St Belvedere with Solid Country at 6:30 pm.
The Ladies Auxiliary and Gerald Kee Post 9164 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars sponsor a New Year’s Eve dance. Doors open at 9 p.m. Admission is 10 for singles and 16 for couples. Retailers saw modest demand for milk and bread while Public Works prepared for slick roads, applying sand and salt to bridges and busy intersections as needed. Local officials noted state help for road treatment and a general cautious mood among residents.
Clinton reports say the first snow of the season failed to deliver heavy accumulation in the Upstate. National Weather Service spokesman Ben Moyer said moisture fell short.
