The Columbia Tax Commission says upcoming state income tax forms will be easier to fill out and process. Director Gary Turner notes the forms now resemble federal ones, requiring taxpayers to copy one number from the federal form to the state form.
A defunct Norwegian island mine in the North Sea is identified as the source of the Statue of Liberty copper skin. Kay Lande Selmer, a Staten Island singer, says the find completes the statue’s history and offers Norway pride. Her sample aided Bell Laboratories during the statue’s 100th anniversary and ongoing renovation.

Dennis Lu cas, 20, of Dayton, Kentucky, seized two teenage boys, ages 14 and 16, in Newport and demanded 50 000 dollars and three plane tickets to England. Police negotiated as SWAT teams secured the area and residents evacuated during the hours long standoff.
Two 12 year old girls Jessica Barrow and Elizabeth Tanner returned home five days after vanishing near Stapleton Georgia claiming they were abducted by two men in a white pickup. Investigators said they were dropped off in the small east Georgia town after being taken while bicycling on an isolated dirt road.
An AP report details a Cessna 210 crash near Salt Lake City killing six aboard from Ontario California and a Mooney 231 crash on Interstate 5 near Seattle killing four. Investigators pursue the cause while witnesses describe low flight and engine trouble.
The Commerce Department’s Index of Leading Indicators rose 0.1 percent in November, the smallest gain since June. Analysts see modest growth ahead with few predicting recession, while stock gains and falling rates support cautious optimism for 1986. The rise was due mainly to stock market strength, with four indicators showing gains.
Christie Brinkley gave birth to the couple’s first child in a Manhattan hospital at about 11 45 p.m. Sunday. The baby weighed six pounds and measured 20 inches. A spokeswoman said the parents have not chosen a name yet.
