Charleston Firefighter Counseling Seeks Permanence After Sofa Store Tragedy
Charleston firefighters and families continue to seek help from the Charleston Firefighter Support Team after the 2007 sofa store fire killed nine. The program funds two retired peer counselors, three clinicians and two psychiatrists with a $360000 annual budget. The state association and the Department of Mental Health funded about $158000, with city costs looming if grants falter. Council members debate making the program permanent, while survivors urge sustained support as part of a broader wellness effort. Capt. Art Wittner credits weekly sessions with easing guilt and anxiety from the mass trauma.
