Commerce Department retools after budget cuts and staff downsizing
The agency shrank staff by 25 percent and reduced to four divisions under Gov. Mark Sanford. Spokesman Will Folks says the streamlined structure delivers faster decisions for firms seeking expansion or new facilities. Last year capital investment reached 764 million with 7,442 new jobs, though counts may not be directly comparable to 2001 figures due to previously included non-direct activities.
